Dr. Zlatibor Lončar

Minister

Born on 3 August 1971 in Belgrade. Completed primary and secondary school in Belgrade with top marks. After graduating from secondary school, he enrolled at the Belgrade University Medical School, which he graduated from in 1996/97. The following year, he completed his internship at the Clinical Centre of Serbia, after which he chose general surgery as the field of specialization at his alma mater and passed the specialist exam in 2003. During his studies, but also after their completion, he participated in writing a number of scientific research papers as author and co-author.

He enrolled in doctoral studies in the field of medical epidemiology in 2008 at the Belgrade University Medical School and defended his PhD thesis in 2015.

Dr Lončar completed a specialist course in hepatobiliary surgery in 2001 at Hammersmith Hospital in London, where he attended additional professional development in 2006. He completed a transplantation surgery specialist course at King's College, London in 2011, and, in 2012/2013, he trained in the field of liver transplantation surgery at the Merkur Clinical Hospital in Zagreb.

He was elected clinical assistant for the surgery course at the Belgrade University Medical School in 2012, and assistant professor in 2019.

He is employed at the Accident and Emergency Clinic of the Clinical Centre of Serbia’s Emergency Centre. From 2010, he was appointed Head of the Intensive Care Unit of the Department of Surgery I. From August 2012, he was Director of the Emergency Centre of the Clinical Centre of Serbia and Assistant Medical Director of the Clinical Centre of Serbia. He was appointed Head of the Transplantation Department in 2013.

During his tenure as the Emergency Centre of the Clinical Centre of Serbia Director, he established the Liver Transplantation Department and led the team which performed the first liver transplantation at the Emergency Centre. He founded a multidisciplinary oncology doctors’ consultation board, established the Voluntary Blood Donation Department, as well as the Mt. Kopaonik Emergency Centre’s Trauma Centre. His personal commitment helped procure the necessary medical equipment for the Emergency Centre.

Dr Lončar was appointed Minister of Health of the Republic of Serbia on 27 April 2014. and reappointed to the same position on 11 August 2016 and on 29 June 2017. His tenure as Minister of Health ended on 26 October 2022.

He took the oath as Minister of Health in the new Republic of Serbia Government makeup on 2 May 2024.

He speaks English. Married, father of two.
